Local Msp/Mp Marks £1 Million Rebirth With Special Announcement
Today, Friday 29 September 2000, Mr Henry McLeish MP, MSP, Minister for Enterprise and Life Long Learning, witnessed the official ‘rebirth’ of Elmpark Sawmills, the Leven headquarters of timber importers and sawmillers James Donaldson Timber Ltd., part of the James Donaldson Group.
The rebirth of the sawmilling premises follows a three phase £1 million investment programme. Phase One created a new timber-clad sales and administration office; improved car parking facilities; and created new signage, gatehouse facilities and fencing. Phase Two resulted in a 5000m2 storage and distribution centre which has enabled the company to double stockholding of prepared goods. Phase Two also encompassed a fully-covered loading bay which enables products to be loaded and despatched to customers in pristine condition. Phase Three increased JDT’s productivity through the installation of a fully-automated high speed moulding line which can handle top quality plain square edged and standard timber profiles, as well as customer specific profiles.
The programme of investment also means that the reborn sawmill can thrive in a clean air atmosphere. A state of the art dust extraction system designed specifically for JDT will ensure a Zero Emission workplace on woodwaste, dust and sawmill residue, ahead of European legislation.
In declaring the refurbished premises officially open, Mr McLeish said:
“I warmly welcome this £1 million investment by James Donaldson Timber. This symbolises a confidence in timber and timber technology as vital resources for the future; in Donaldson as a company which chooses to invest in that future; and in Fife as a place worthy of investment. I congratulate everyone involved in this lively and worthwhile rebirth.
I am especially delighted to announce that a further £1/2 million is to be invested immediately, ensuring that all James Donaldson Timber sawmilling and machining capabilities will now be state of the art.”
Mr Scott Cairns, Managing Director of James Donaldson Timber Ltd said:
“My colleagues and I are delighted that our local MSP/MP could join us to mark this occasion along with so many guests and friends. It is fitting that many of these guests and friends are also our customers, who are always our focus at Donaldson Timber. My pledge to our customers is continued commitment to service and quality – and to our growth together as prosperous business partners.”
Commenting on the impact of the investment on the local area, Mr Cairns continued:
“This is a very substantial investment and spells out our commitment as a company to this part of Fife and to the continuing development of Elmpark Sawmills as a centre of excellence for our industry.”
